Following the spirit and momentum of the Launch event, the next steps for EWS are promising! Former piloting partners committed to operationalize the EWS system in their premises and new sectors are ready to customize the implementation of the EWS standard for their applications.

In 2012, the paper mill UPM will provide a good example to insure the good performance of the EWS standard for the paper industry, process that started in 2010 with the pilot test in HOLMEN (Madrid). Hürth, established as a 100% recycling mill, with 100 people as staff and an annual capacity of approximately 310.000 tonnes of newsprint, will add information on Best Management Practices and will help defining the critical points for this sector. With the information compiled after these two pilot project studies, EWS can be sure that the tool is ready for other paper mills!

For new sectors, Malaga and Göteborg Landvetter Airport, will take the lead over the implementation of the EWS standard in airports. The aim of this new phase of piloting is, besides providing performance evaluation of the pilot operation, the customization of the EWS standard to different sectors. Malaga-Costa del Sol airport is one of the oldest Spanish airports. Its location near Costa del Sol, insures affluence of tourisms to one of Europe’s top holiday destinations. In 2010, it handled 12 million passengers, 105,634 flight operations and 3,064 tonnes of cargo. Göteborg Landvetter Airport, western Sweden’s international airport, has scheduled non-stop routes to some 50 destinations. It handled a total of 4.1 million travellers and 61,000 operations in 2010. The combination of experiences from the implementation of the EWS standard under such different climatic and regional conditions will definitely insure the good performance of the standard under any condition!

On farming site, the Cyprus organic farmers association (COFA) decided to enlarge the implementation of the EWS standard on producer groups of grapes and potatoes. A clear sign and commitment towards the upcoming presidency in the water year 2012.
