Event Report

European Water Partnership (EWP) convened a public conference on 4 October 2017 in Brussels to explore the question if ongoing water stewardship initiatives undertaken by companies, farmers and cities support the achievement of the policy objectives on sustainable water management and agriculture, both enshrined in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) that the EU has committed to achieve by 2030 as well as achievement of the objectives of the EU water legislation such as EU Water Framework Directive (WFD).

Participants took stock of the progress made on water stewardship and discussed how corporate water stewardship initiatives can be better connected with government action and river basin management planning.

Two breakout sessions provided an opportunity to explore how supply chain actors can be included in collaborative water stewardship as well as which incentives can support water users in both agriculture and industry to adopt water stewardship practices.

The conference also showcased the work of the CAPWaSA Platform coordinated by the EWP that promotes collective action partnerships between farmers, companies, public authorities and civil society. The afternoon session showcased some of the examples of engaging farmers in water stewardship and discussed enabling factors for upscaling such collective action partnerships.
