Political process

The Political Process of the Forum aimed to bring together politicians and elected officials from all over the world, not only responsible for water, environment, agriculture or energy policies, but also for finance or other domains, in order to create the understanding for the urgency of positive and pro-active policies on water issues.

Based on the experience developed further during the 4th World Water Forum in Mexico, the political process of the 5th World Water Forum in Istanbul involved four interconnected political groups, namely national governments, local authorities, elected parliamentarians and Ministers. These four groups met, along with participants, at the 5th World Water Forum, to discuss “Water Management Adaptation Strategies for Global Changes, including Climate Variability/Change”.

The Forum was attended by:

  • 9 Heads of States/Governments and 3 International Organization Directors/Secretary Generals met for the Heads of State Summit
  • 84 Ministers and 19 Vice Ministers
  • 250 parliamentarians and 200 local authorities including 59 Mayors

In four Prepcom meetings the Ministerial Agenda (link) was set up, which was agreed at the final meeting of the Forum on Sunday 22 March.
