Parallel Projects

Simultaneously to the DESIRAS project several initiatives are initiated and running, at this moment. The parallel projects, in the frame of the EU-DGE ‘Pilot project on development of prevention activities to halt desertification in Europe’are briefly described:

REDSIM

In many areas of Southern Spain and other Mediterranean Countries, there is scope for improving the productivity of presently irrigated lands, even if the cost of irrigation water increases. Increasing the productivity of water in agriculture holds a key to mitigating the impact of water scarcity due to natural (drought events) or human over-consumption. A common perception is that increasing water productivity of irrigated agriculture in arid areas is among the most efficient water policies to fight desertification and rural exodus. In the frame of the EU-DGE parallel projects, the REDSIM proposal addresses the topics “Water savings/water efficiency measures’ and ‘alternative forms of irrigation’.

More precisely, REDSIM deals with the development of management technologies and tools to improve land and water productivity in arid agricultural lands, at farm and watershed levels. Our overall objective is to improve Irrigation Water Productivity (IWP) in water-stressed watersheds, by developing and validating an Information-Decision Support System (REDSIM-IS) based on Remote sensing (RS) information and simplified water balance and crop models to assist growers in implementing and managing efficiently deficit irrigation (DI) techniques.

I-Adapt

The i-adapt project aims to provide a specific, actionable plan for combating desertification through the use of emerging technologies, piloted in the Pinios River Basin in Greece, and quantify the expected impact of this plan on Pinios.

The project will actively engage stakeholders to identify both major impacts of desertification in the pilot area and focus on experimental applications of new technologies and techniques.

I-Adapt

The i-adapt project aims to provide a specific, actionable plan for combating desertification through the use of emerging technologies, piloted in the Pinios River Basin in Greece, and quantify the expected impact of this plan on Pinios.

The project will actively engage stakeholders to identify both major impacts of desertification in the pilot area and focus on experimental applications of new technologies and techniques.

The main focus of the project is the agricultural sector which is by far the main water user in the Pinios Basin. Within the project a number of promising technologies to reduce water   demand by agriculture are selected and their cost-benefit is assessed using comprehensive integrated hydrological model of the Pinios Basin.

MIDMURES

MIDMURES is a pilot project on development of prevention activities to halt desertification in Europe. This topic will be achieved by incorporating interdisciplinary team of researchers from four Romanian partner organizations – the National Meteorological Administration, the National Research and Development Institute for Soil Science, Agricultural Chemistry and Environment, the National Institute of Hydrology and Water Management and the National Institute for Aerospace Research “Elie Carafoli”. This approach makes use of the advantages of the international cooperation, joined efforts and complementary expertise of the partners.

The main objective of the MIDMURES Project is to test specially designed technologies, techniques or practices in order to decrease the drought effect in the Mures River Basin.
