Agricultural Ministers from Around the World Rally for Sustainable Water Use
Jan 31st, 2017 |
A high level panel on Food Security and Water Management at the International Green Week Berlin brought together Agriculture Ministers from around the world to discuss a common position on sustainable water management in agriculture. A communiqué adopted as a result of the gathering highlighted some key actions that would be taken to: enhance access to water, improve water quality, reduce the risk of water scarcity and manage runoff.
Speaking on the relevance for the EU, Commissioner Hogan argued that making agriculture more productive but also more resource-efficient would require harmonizing different economic, political and policy objectives. A new Task Force on Water was initiated in order to “develop a long-term alliance between different Commission services” and help ”boost necessary investment and spread best practice with a view to foster transition to water sustainability in EU agriculture”.
