ABP Food Group Takes on the Water Stewardship Challenge

ABP Cahir is an integrated beef processing facility based in Ireland and is part of ABP Food Group. The site recently undertook a preliminary gap assessment against the European Water Stewardship standard in June of this year. The assessment, supported by Central Solutions Ltd, has helped the site to structure its holistic approach to water management. Barry O’Donovan, environmental officer at ABP Cahir said “With a systematic approach for prioritising investments we have implemented an in-depth sub metering system and identified specific targets to continuously improve and develop water stewardship at the site. We feel the Standard mirrors our sustainability program by “Doing More With Less” – we are committed to increasing production while decreasing resource consumption”.

The assessment also helped the company to establish key performance indicators for significant water use in order to enhance behavioural changes in their internal operations. The site will undergo the final assessment for the European Water Stewardship in Autumn 2015. ABP Food Group is now in the process of bringing their work on water stewardship into a national platform to help other water users apply similar techniques.
