Water Stewardship has hit some incredible milestones in the past 12 months. With the release of the global Water Stewardship standard by the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) and 5 new certifications with the EWS standard, substantial change in sustainable water management is coming at a number of levels.
The Water Stewardship Local Actions Driving Global Impact Event, on 3 July 2014 highlighted some of these achievements, told by the stories of water stewards. The Event Report details the lessons learned and practical experiences from representatives in different sectors.
Participants observed the usefulness of Water Stewardship in bringing all elements of water management together and allowing companies to develop a competitive business model. BASF representative Brigitte Dittrich-Kraemer noted that Water Stewardship has guided the company to “integrate water criteria into investment decision-making processes as well as those assessing (new) capital expenditures. This enable decisions which are based on a comprehensive evaluation of the risks and opportunities related to water.”
The event featured broad proponents of Water Stewardship; from civil society, authorities, water service providers and the investor community, with some advocating for Water Stewardship as an alternative to more expensive approaches.
