In April 2012 the DESIRAS project was finalised. The DESIRAS project was supported by the EC – DG Environment and coordinated by the EWP to support the EC efforts to address desertification in Europe. The DESIRAS project tested an innovative technology to minimise the water use in irrigation on three farms in Cyprus and Spain, clearly showing the potential for water saving at these farms. DESIRAS established that water savings of up to 50% are reachable using innovative technologies like the technology tested in DESIRAS, with no negative effects on crop-yield and lowering the occurrence of diseases. To make use of this potential, governments should take measures to put incentives in place for the implementation of innovative technologies by farmers.
