Two RISE pilot farms tested on-site in Belgium

Brussels, 16 June 2011. The fruitful cooperation with the Vegetable Growers Association „Vegras‟ is now concrete due to execution of pilot tests on two Belgian farms. These pilot farms, a vegetable farm and a farm with livestock and vegetable production, are located in the basin of the river Leie. Being part of the large groundwater system „Sokkel‟, which is suffering of severe abstraction-linked water scarcity, made the two pilots an interesting case for the EWP Water Stewardship program! Together with an experienced auditor from the Stewardship partner “Control Union Certifications”, the EWP team performed End of May the on-site audit on both farms. Currently, none of them is using deep groundwater of the Sokkel system. Both farms are capturing rain or drainage water from the fields, which is then used for irrigation. However, due to current problems regarding water availability, the farmers invested in a more efficient irrigation boom system or explored new water sources. Both farmers were enthusiastic on the program and are looking forward to get to know their farm tailored response scheme as outcome of the pilot test. With this support, they intend to optimize their water management towards more sustainability.
