Why climate change and water?

Climate change models suggest that over the next century our planet will become warmer to the tune of 1.4 to 5.8°C, depending on levels of greenhouse gas emissions. The changes in the climate will affect both the quality and quantity of water available for humans and the environment. Extreme weather events, such as floods and droughts, are likely to increase in both severity and frequency. Climate change is also expected to affect the water quality in a number of ways.

Public awareness and mobilisation of every citizen is necessary to prevent and adapt to the consequences of climate change on water. The young people will focus on this challenge and on behavior changes not only at their local level, but also at international level.

What will be the program?

✦Interactive learning activities and case studies on climate change and water with experts and elected representative

✦Workshops and field activities (debates, role plays, local investigations)

✦Cultural events (intercultural and Dutch evening, excursion in Amsterdam)

✦A democratic process with the writing and the adoption of a common declaration, election of young representatives

✦An official final public session in the House of the Province of Gelderland with political figure

What are the expected results?

✦A common declaration on climate change and water to be disseminated to local, national and European elected representatives as well as during other international conferences.

✦ Awareness tools to be spread at local level in schools, associations, local governments etc.

For 12 years now, Solidarity Water Europe (SWE) has been organising with its partners the European Youth Parliaments for Water to enable young people to take an active part in the future of this precious resource.
