EWP Water Stewardship Standard tested on-site

Brussels, 17 November 2010. BASF SE (Ludwigshafen, Germany), Coca Cola Erfrischungsgetränke AG CCE AG (Genshagen, Germany) and HOLMEN PAPER (Madrid, Spain) are the first three pilot organizations which have successfully tested the implementation of the EWP Water Stewardship Standard on-site.
The pilot studies serve to gain a better understanding of the practical impacts of the draft standard, to test its applicability and to receive feedback from future standard-users on the proposed assessment schemes and communication tools.
“The results of the first pilot studies proved that the Water Stewardship Standard is understandable and practicable. Even under highly regulated conditions and in well-managed organizations, the Water Stewardship scheme provides an added-value by giving a new, comprehensive and far-reaching view on the sustainability of the water management inside the operation and on the level of the referring water shed“, said Sabine von Wirén-Lehr, EWP Water Stewardship program coordinator.
The pilot studies not only allowed to simplify the questionnaires, to make them more clear and concise, but they also enabled the companies to understand the practical problems and the barriers that sustainable water use assessment may have. As a main outcome, the pilot organizations received an exhaustive analysis of the major strengths and drawbacks regarding their operational water management together with a list of the referring improvement points. The outcome of the pilot studies will facilitate all three pilot organizations to define appropriate response strategies and to further adapt and improve their water management strategies.
Especially businesses in agriculture and industry are striving to take actively part in the development of a European Water Stewardship Standard. Already by the end of 2010, additional pilot studies in both sectors are getting started.
